Description
The author was inspired by the fate of Jewish relatives from the family of Leopold Ofner, a landowner and businessman in the former Zamlekov (now Zavlekov in the Klatovy district). From his eight children came the author's grandmother, Hermína Kolárová, née Ofnerová. The manuscript outlines the situation of the extended family – the Ofners' children, their partners, grandchildren, and other relatives – during the Second Republic and the Protectorate, and retrospectively also in the more distant past. The period of the Nazi Holocaust meant expulsion from normal life, humiliation, and bullying, culminating in extermination in concentration camps. Only one grandson, the author's later father, escaped by fleeing from the Protectorate to the Western Czechoslovak Army. In addition to the Ofner family, the book also features marriages of related families, primarily the Münz family from Horažďovice, producers of spirits and wines, and the Kopperl family from Proseč, owners of a famous pipe factory. This documentary prose was created based on personal documents, registry entries, records from Jewish communities, local chronicles, and testimonies from witnesses, of course with the necessary authorial fabrication that bridges some gaps in the family history.
