Description
The Olympic Games returned to the same city in winter for the first time, where they had already been held in summer. Following Beijing 2008 came Beijing 2022. This time, no records were expected from the Czech Republic at the games, but our participation was already record-breaking. A total of 116 athletes earned their nomination, the highest number in the history of the Winter Olympics (although not all qualified athletes were able to compete). Legends of our sports history, Ester Ledecká and Martina Sáblíková, made an indelible mark. Ester won her third gold medal (adding to her two from Pyeongchang with a third title defense in her royal discipline of parallel slalom in snowboarding). Additionally, she achieved excellent placements in Super G and the combined downhill in alpine skiing, further underscoring her exceptional talent. Speed skater Martina Sáblíková bounced back from health issues that plagued her during the Olympic season and managed to secure bronze in the five-kilometer race. With her seventh medal at the games, she ranks second in our historical tables, just behind the unattainable Věra Čáslavská.
