The famous Luftwaffe fighter Hans-Joachim Marseille (1919–1942) certainly did not embody the ideal Aryan hero. His unmilitary demeanor and love for jazz drove all his superiors crazy. Nevertheless, he became a hero of Nazi propaganda and was also a holder of the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds. He began his combat career during the Battle of Britain, where he achieved his first seven victories. He himself was shot down several times and continued to serve with a very low rank due to his disciplinary offenses. In the ranks of JG 27, he participated in a brief campaign in the Balkans and then fought in North Africa until his death, where he earned the nickname that forms the main title of this publication. Overall, Marseille shot down 158 aircraft of the Western Allies, making him the most successful German pilot fighting against them.
