Description
A collection of several stories set in Eastern Bohemia addresses the question of whether to leave a critically endangered but rapidly expanding species of predator in the landscape without any regulation. Is the truth on the side of the conservationists and activists, whose enthusiasm often borders on fanaticism, or on the side of farmers and hunters, who, as long-time residents, must often deal with the consequences of these decisions? As one character in a story says: We used to watch wolves from behind the zoo fence; now we are behind the fence, and the wolves are watching us. The straightforward and engagingly written stories, which often read like a detective novel, depict the escalating disputes between both sides and the helplessness of the locals, who increasingly feel that they have no support anywhere.
