On September 27, 2020, Azerbaijan, supported by Turkey, attacked the Nagorno-Karabakh region, an enclave that had been controlled by Armenia for the past 30 years. The war was supposed to be a blitzkrieg; however, Armenians managed to defend themselves for 44 days. The brutal fighting, which soldiers described as a massacre, was halted by a ceasefire mediated by Russia. The war resulted in around 10,000 dead soldiers on both sides of the conflict and 146 dead civilians. Thousands of people are still missing. Many war crimes were committed during the conflict. Armenians lost 80% of Karabakh and adjacent territories. The ceasefire ended the fighting, but not the human suffering. Tens of thousands of Armenians lost their homes, and thousands of soldiers lost limbs. Evidence is mounting of civilians being tortured by the Azerbaijani army. Lenka Klicperová and Markéta Kutilová set out for Karabakh on the first day of the attack, becoming the first Czech journalists to reach the conflict area. At the end of the war, they returned to the site and crossed the border into Karabakh on the first day of the ceasefire. They witnessed the burning of Karabakh villages and the arrival of Russian soldiers. In January 2021, they undertook a third trip and brought testimonies from civilians about Azerbaijan's war crimes.
