Description
During the German occupation of the Netherlands from 1940 to 1945, all Jews were ordered to register for their ancestral religion. Reich Commissioner Arthur Seyss-Inquart hired young lawyer Hans Calmeyer to decide on "disputed cases." Calmeyer interpreted his task in his own way and managed to save at least 3,700 people of Jewish descent from deportation and certain death. This is twice as many as the famous Oskar Schindler managed to save. The author of the book, Laureen Nussbaum – born Hannelore Klein – owes her life to this brave German official. In the book The Jewish Star, she tells the story of how Calmeyer declared her mother a non-Jew, removed her and her family from the deportation lists, and thanks to him, they all survived the war. Calmeyer's fate intertwined with the story of the author's family and her friend, later husband Rudi Nussbaum, also during the post-war period, and we will follow them until their deaths. The book also mentions Anne Frank, whose family was close to the author's family. The Jewish Star is an extraordinary story of human courage and resilience in humanity's darkest hour.
