Description
MESSENGER OF PEACE OR SPAWN OF HELL? The year is 802. The Franks and Saracens are mercilessly fighting for political and religious supremacy. In this tense situation, the Baghdad caliph sends a huge gift to his opponent Charlemagne as a sign of peace: an elephant. The Jew Isaac and his Saxon slave Thankmar must transport the pachyderm safely to Aachen. It is a delicate mission because the people they encounter on their long journey through the Frankish Empire consider the elephant to be a spawn of hell. Its death would plunge the great empires of the Franks and Saracens into a terrible war. The novel tells the story of probably the greatest hero of the Middle Ages. The elephant Abúl Abbás was a gift from the caliph Hárún ar-Rašíd to Emperor Charlemagne. His journey from Baghdad to Aachen is historically documented.
