Description
That's him! – Three words that may have inspired the artistic name of the surrealist painter Toyen. A name as mysterious as she was herself. It was as if she was always covering her tracks. Her testimonies were thus provided by others. Painter Jindřich Štyrský, with whom she formed a lifelong artistic duo. Jewish poet Jindřich Heisler, whom she hid in her studio apartment in Žižkov until the end of the war because he refused to board a transport. Her friends from Devětsil, Vítězslav Nezval, Jaroslav Seifert, or Karel Teige. Or the French surrealists when she went into exile in Paris in 1947. Thanks to these testimonies, as well as research in archives in the Czech Republic and France, Milena Štráfeldová wrote her fictionalized biography. The story of Marie Čermínová, born in Prague's Smíchov, who was recognized by André Breton as one of the ten most significant world artists of the 20th century.
