Description
When a hundred-year-old, hand-drawn map is found in the wall of a bistro in Three Pines, it initially seems like just a curiosity, but the more the villagers examine it, the stranger it appears to them. Armand Gamache, who receives it as a gift on his first day at a new job, is fascinated by the peculiar map, but he has no idea what terrible secrets it will ultimately lead him to. At the Sureté academy, of which Gamache has become the new commander to create a healthier environment for training future police officers, a murder occurs involving one of the instructors, and for mysterious reasons, a copy of that old map is found in the room with the corpse. As the investigation progresses, the individual clues increasingly point like a compass needle toward Gamache's thirteenth chamber, which even he is afraid to enter. But to solve the case and come to terms with his past, he has no other choice.
