Description
The journey from Reichenberg to Hejnice winds through a steep, wooded pass. It is getting dark, and a snowstorm howls and rages over the mountains. During the arduous ride, two men get acquainted in the stagecoach. Father Vilém – a priest fleeing from his past – and Doctor Šulc, an eccentric physician from Vienna. The two have very little in common, but it soon becomes clear that they were brought together not by chance, but by someone's cunning scheme. Both know too much about a dark case of sacrilege. The investigation complicates as a series of bloody murders occurs two weeks after the Hejnice church was robbed. Is it all connected to the dangerous intrigues spun by the local abbot? And what does the former military chaplain from nearby Bílý Potok hide? The investigation subsequently drags our heroes deep into the mountains: among poachers and smugglers ruled by the notorious sharpshooter Tapper. It is a freezing February in the year of our Lord 1789.
