Description
The Summer Olympic Games are the ultimate sporting event, bringing together athletes from every country on the planet. This Czech-language book traces the modern history of the Games from 1896, focusing in an unusual way on the greatest curiosities and surprising anecdotes. These entertaining stories also highlight the human side of their central figures: a sport-pistol champion who lost his right arm in the war and learned to shoot so well with his left that he won gold twice; a marathon runner who extended his race by more than a kilometre while being chased by an enraged dog; a Portuguese long-distance runner who was hit by a car yet managed to win the marathon in Los Angeles ten days later, setting a world record; and a regatta competitor who abandoned his race to help two rivals who were drowning. These are just some of more than 400 stories in this collection of Olympic anecdotes.
