Description
In 1942, Jews in Slovakia face one restriction after another: they may not leave their homes after nine in the evening, gather together or attend school. Then unmarried women aged sixteen to thirty-six are ordered to report for forced labour. Their families fear for them but try to remain optimistic, believing the girls will earn some money, prove that Jews are hardworking and honest, and return home. Wearing their best clothes and carrying only what they need, the women set off without knowing that the Slovak government, led by President Tiso, has paid Germany for their deportation. From Poprad in Slovakia, a transport carrying a thousand unsuspecting women leaves for Auschwitz, where they face systematic extermination. This book traces their fates. The contents are in Czech.
