Description
The fourth installment of the epic family saga offers a glimpse into the further fates of the Hunter family and their servants. The war has now been ongoing for three years, and fatigue is beginning to weigh on everyone. Basic necessities are running low in Britain, there is a general shortage of food, an exceptionally long and harsh winter has depleted coal supplies, and the nation is suffering. Yet, even under these harsh conditions, people do not give up; they grit their teeth and carry on – armaments factories continuously churn out weapons for the front, volunteers care for the sick, soup kitchens are organized for the poor, ancient parks are being plowed to create more arable land, and households are competing in how to cook economically and substitute for the scarce flour. The poorest are kept alive by the War Loaf, for which the government has set a fixed price. More and more women are getting involved in the war, and women's issues and voting rights are coming up for discussion in Parliament. Everything is changing, and the old order is disappearing irretrievably. Changes are also occurring among the Hunters, and the originally close-knit family members are drifting further apart.
