A gripping story about searching and (not) finding, about human prejudices, friendship, and first love. Theodore Finch is fascinated by death. He constantly thinks about ways he could kill himself. But each time, something – no matter how seemingly insignificant – ultimately stops him. Violet Markey, on the other hand, lives for the future – she is focused on finishing high school and the moment she can leave her hometown in Indiana. It painfully reminds her of the recent tragic death of her sister. When the two meet on the roof of the school bell tower, it is not quite clear who will actually save whom. Finch is an ordinary boy, except that he suffers from bipolar disorder. Violet is an ordinary girl, except that Finch finds her completely extraordinary. The two are brought together by a school project aimed at discovering the 'beauties of Indiana,' and both make interesting discoveries along the way. Finch realizes that he can only be himself – quirky, thoughtful, but also fun and original – with Violet; and that he is not as much of a freak as others think. Violet, meanwhile, forgets to count the days until the end of school and finally begins to live again. But while Violet's world expands and gains new colors, Finch sinks into the darkness of depression.
