Description
In 2023, the Slovak Academy of Sciences commemorated the 70th anniversary of its founding. Compared to traditional academies, such as the French one, as well as the academies of neighboring countries, the SAS is a relatively young institution. Seventy years, however, represents a period worthy of historians' attention. The history of the Slovak Academy has, of course, been written about in the past, but there has been a lack of a work that captures the entire history of the SAS in its complexity from its inception (including prehistory) to the present day. This task was undertaken by the staff of the Historical Institute of the SAS and the Archives of the SAS. The result of their work is a piece that aims to provide a synthetic and comprehensive view of the development of this significant Slovak scientific institution. Scientific research is part of the overall societal development in every society and expresses the needs of each society to understand the world in its diversity. This has been and continues to be the mission of the SAS. Its development also reflects the dramatic struggle for scientific knowledge, which scientists – and this is doubly true for the humanities and social sciences – managed to wrest even under unfavorable social circumstances. The authors aimed to present the historical development of the SAS in all its complexity and contradictions.
