A man who was present at the birth of independent Slovak diplomacy and was one of the two founders of the Slovak Ministry of International Relations in 1991 shares his interesting experiences, personal testimonies, and rich professional background. In the turbulent nineties, he served as the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic and was the chief negotiator for Slovakia's entry into the European Union, fighting for Slovakia's path to the EU, NATO, and OECD from 1994 to 1998. At one time, he was labeled a 'Mečiar supporter,' although Mečiar himself did not favor him; however, he needed him as an experienced professional. In 1996, he promoted his new concept of the economic dimension of diplomacy both domestically and internationally. During his diplomatic career, he experienced, saw, and accomplished many remarkable things. The beginnings of his diplomatic journey date back to the years of socialist Czechoslovakia and extend into the 21st century. Moreover, he is a good and witty storyteller who expresses himself directly, simply, and to the point. His book compellingly illuminates various aspects of modern political history and personalities of our state and partially the world. The motto of the book and the lifelong work of Jozef Šesták is: 'Democratically elected governments…'
