Description
The collective monograph provides insights into the development of society in Slovakia over a relatively long period: from the end of the 19th century to the end of World War II. It opens several new topics and new perspectives on themes that have already been addressed. The relatively long time frame that the authors cover is necessary to track the development of society as a gradual evolutionary process rather than just in short, dynamic periods of so-called historical milestones: revolutions, coups, uprisings. All these milestones are relatively well documented in historiography and have become part of the Slovak national 'master' narrative. There is no doubt that these events had a fundamental significance for the development of society in Slovakia. However, they did not manifest immediately. For example, the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918 was crucial for the formation of Slovaks as a modern nation, but this process was completed only in the 1930s. Similarly, gradual modernization, industrialization, and urbanization occurred in Slovak conditions. In society, and not just in Slovakia, there are usually retarding, conservative forces that cause even revolutionary events, after their 'explosion', to tend to return society back to the old ways over time...
