Description

The medieval Benedictine monasticism is currently primarily associated with the idea of communities of monks that closed themselves off from the outside world behind the walls of monasteries, with the spiritual bond being the Rule of St. Benedict. Benedictine monasteries are also perceived as significant centers of spiritual culture in the early and high Middle Ages. However, the Benedictines were also an inseparable part of the medieval lay society. Predominantly, monarchs or founders from the ranks of medieval nobility not only established monasteries but also generously endowed them in hopes of achieving salvation. Significant abbeys had the obligation to host numerous retinues of kings, princes, or bishops, and monastic churches served as places of final rest for founders and patrons. Abbots simultaneously entered into political, diplomatic, and often military services of royal courts. The book "Benedictine Monasteries and Their Donors in Arpad Hungary" offers a detailed look at the coexistence and interaction of Benedictine monasteries and their founders, patrons, or other donors in Hungary during the reign of the Arpad kings in the 11th to 13th centuries.
