Description
The publication is the first historical-ethnological probe into the history of Valentine's Day in Slovakia. It offers a view of the holiday practice, that is, the ways of experiencing and celebrating this holiday in Slovakia in the 21st century from an ethnological perspective. It brings insights into the significance and functions of the holiday for the inhabitants of Slovakia, both for individuals and for members of various social groups. Valentine's Day simultaneously serves as a framework for observing the processes of transformation of holiday culture in Slovakia after 1990 in the conditions of late modernity. The published findings are based on a wide range of diverse sources from archival documents to internet resources. The development and current forms of Valentine's Day in Slovakia, still referred to as a new holiday, which has already become established here, are also illustrated by the visual material included in the publication.
