Description
This book aims to clarify the fundamentals of fracture-mechanical procedures and computational programs. The basic ideas of linear elastic fracture mechanics are simple, yet some of the mathematical procedures used are very complicated, so various simplifications and approximations are employed in practical applications. At this basic level, beginners sometimes feel that linear elastic fracture mechanics lacks a sufficient scientific foundation. Therefore, I have supplemented the text with additional materials responding to many objections and questions raised over the years by participants in my introductory courses. I assume that the reader is familiar with the mechanical properties of metallic materials, as well as with linear elastic stress analysis of bodies without cracks. At the end of each chapter, there is a clear summary of its content.
