Description
This Czech-language book presents Mika Waltari’s extensive, openly anti-Soviet report on the Baltic countries between autumn 1939 and summer 1940, when Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia faced the growing influence of the Soviet Union before falling under its control. First published in Swedish in April 1941 under the pseudonym Nauticus, the Finnish-language work was placed on a list of banned books shortly after the war and returned to shops and libraries almost 70 years later under Waltari’s real name. Drawing on his journalistic experience and considerable literary talent, Waltari tells an engaging story supplemented by excerpts from propaganda materials and speeches by political figures, as well as contemporary political anecdotes that emphasize the text’s ironic and at times almost bittersweet character. His bleak testimony offers valuable insight into the situation of the Baltic states at a time when they were shrouded in darkness for the rest of the world, becoming another fragment in the mosaic of European wartime history.
