Description
The publication aims to collect Czech, Moravian, and Silesian place names that reflect the names of trees, shrubs, and subshrubs. Trees and shrubs, especially those growing independently, attract attention, and have historically served to determine location, direction, or orientation in the terrain. Places named after woody plants are mapped in the book, and the related localities of municipalities are collectively recorded in public online maps that offer data for further use. However, the recorded data must be interpreted cautiously, as proper names behave quite specifically in usage. Their purpose is not to convey an image of the past or present landscape, but they can hint at the past and present relationship of the inhabitants to it.
