Description

The publication deals with the standard pronunciation of the English language (known as RP) and its perception by English and Czech speakers. It further examines the roles that the pronunciation model plays in both environments. The introductory part of the work presents a diachronic and synchronic theoretical framework, drawing from a rich body of contemporary and historical scholarly literature, and analyzes RP using sociolinguistic concepts, primarily from the fields of language prescription and standardization. The practical part consists of research conducted through a website featuring 18 recordings and a supplementary questionnaire. These recordings were evaluated by 20 English and 20 Czech respondents. The research also addresses sociolinguistic categories that help create the conceptual framework of standardness.
