Description

At the beginning was Alain Corbin's book On the Trail of the Unknown and the unusual beauty of the forgotten compositions of Nicolaus Zangius. The publication microscopically traces the fate and work of Nicolaus Zangius (circa 1568 to 1617), a conductor in Iburg, Gdańsk, Moravia, and Berlin. Although he was merely one of several titular servants at the court of Emperor Rudolf II, in the spirit of literary guidance, he is the ideal representative of the Rudolfine musical culture outside its own center: as the conductor of the Moravian land governor Karl of Liechtenstein, he contributed to the creation, training, and equipping of the Liechtenstein court ensemble, known as the music. Given Zangius's tireless activities in publishing and dedicating primarily occasional works, an important motif of the book is also the symbolic significance of gifts in the early modern period. A CD titled Nicolaus Zangius: Cantiones sacrae is included with the book.
