Description
Czech and later American mathematician Václav Hlavatý (1894–1969) devoted a significant part of his career to areas of mathematics related to the search for a unified field theory inspired by Einstein's theory of relativity. His life and work were strongly influenced by both developments in science and significant events in 20th-century history: the world wars, the founding of Czechoslovakia, the Nazi occupation and the closure of Czech universities, the rise of the Communist Party in Czechoslovakia, and the Cold War. The book maps his life as it flowed between mathematics and physics, between Europe and America, and between science and politics.
