Description

The study is a biographical portrait of Eduard Winter (1896–1982), a significant church historian and Sudeten German Catholic intellectual from Bohemia, whose life and historiographical work reflect the political upheavals of Central European history in the 20th century. Attention is given to Winter in his role as a historian of the so-called spiritual history of the Czech lands and the history of religious thought, who sought a middle path to a reformist Catholic interpretation of the past amid the heightened nationalism of the first half of the century and the dogmatic version of communist idealism during the political breaks of his time. The focus of the study lies on his activities in Prague before 1945. The six years of Nazi occupation of the Czech lands are analyzed in more detail, as the author considers them a dark but key episode in Winter's intellectual biography.
