Ivan Mrázek, a renowned gemologist and holder of several awards for authorship in professional literature, has been systematically studying artistic/craft objects made with precious stones for many years. His new book addresses modern gemstone decoration of significant cultural monuments preserved in museum and gallery collections, in the furnishings of castles, chateaus, churches, and monasteries, as well as in the deposits of archaeological institutions in Moravia and Silesia. Artistic and craft objects are usually evaluated primarily from an art-historical perspective; their material is often of secondary interest and it is not within the expertise of art historians to determine the precious stones used. Dr. Mrázek's work therefore offers readers a completely new approach to understanding rare cultural artifacts.
