Intonation in English and Czech Dialogues – Chamonikolasová Jana (2017)

The monograph is a corpus study of intonation in English and Czech conversation. It focuses on the length of the intonational unit, the position of the nuclear tone, the part of speech classification of the bearer of the nuclear tone, its function in sentence perspective, and the contours of various types of intonational units. These phenomena were examined in four texts – two translated versions of a play (Czech and English) and two parallel (comparable) natural dialogues (one Czech and one English). The study compares not only English texts with Czech ones but also literary dialogues with natural texts (in both languages).
