Description
The publication focuses on the absurd and its scenic potential in the theater of French Dada and emerging Surrealism. The corpus consists of three texts that have not yet been the subject of appropriate research: two of them have not been evaluated in terms of their scenicity (T. Tzara: The First Heavenly Adventure of Mr. Antipyrine, R. Vitrac: The Secret of Love), while the third has almost entirely escaped attention (A. Breton – P. Soupault: Please). The author views the absurd as an aesthetic category applicable to theatrical analysis as such – in contrast to the popular concept of the so-called 'absurd drama' by British critic M. Esslin (defined in relation to the avant-garde of the 1950s), which is often criticized for its inaccuracy but has not yet undergone any thorough analysis. The conclusion is devoted, among other things, to evaluating Esslin's conception of the absurd in theater.
