It examines how and why different illative case forms have stabilized in today's standard Estonian and Finnish, to what extent they are used, and how their interrelationships can be described. It also focuses on the description of the illative meaning in both languages. It reflects on the concept of linguistic categories and the notion of motivation in language grammar, discussing the possibilities of utilizing cognitive grammatical frameworks in the description of the morphology of these two languages.
