Description
The publication sheds light on one of the fundamental chapters in the history of Russian historiography. It provides an analysis of Boris N. Chicherin's (1828–1904) concept of Russian history in the contemporary context of Russian historiography and in the context of Chicherin's state and philosophical works. The work thoroughly maps the beginnings and circumstances surrounding the emergence of the so-called state school in Russian historiography, whose representatives included, besides Chicherin, other prominent figures in Russian historical thought – K. D. Kavelin, S. M. Solovyov, and T. N. Granovsky. With the help of relevant sources, the individual aspects of their understanding of Russian history and the contemporary reactions to their works are examined. The book also captures the connections between Chicherin's conception of Russian history and Russian liberalism of the mid-19th century.
