Description
The collective monograph titled 'Johann Georg Gettner und das barocke Theater zwischen Nikolsburg und Krumau' presents the results of several years of joint research by an international team of authors in the field of baroque theater in southern Moravia and southern Bohemia. It also includes a commented edition of two newly discovered dramatic texts by traveling comedians (1 manuscript and 1 printed text). The focus is on the playwright, theater director, and actor Johann Georg Gettner (?–1696), a native of Mikulov and a leading figure of the Eggenberg princely comedians in Český Krumlov. Through this personality, the phenomenon of Czech baroque theater is presented in broader contexts, not merely as a product of the Eggenberg princely court, but as a result of multiple components and influences – the school theater of the Piarists, the court culture of the Habsburgs, and the practices of traveling professional companies. This approach allows Czech baroque theater to be perceived in the context of the history of European theater as a parallel to the practices of Italian and English professional theater.
