Is it a luxury in a consumer society to have or not to have? Is there still a revolt today, or are its current manifestations merely mainstream with a commercial brand of revolt? What mark does a person leave on nature? What mark does culture, especially consumer culture, leave on a person? These questions are posed not only by experts in educational institutions but also by those who have not been formally appointed to education. Our ethnographic research focused on the subculture of freegans. They seek an environmentally friendly way of life within the consumer society. However, they do not keep their unique lifestyle to themselves and also offer it to the general public. We identify the goals and means they use for this. Freegans thus assume the role of specific educators, and therefore we can label them as unofficial educational agents. The publication opens up considerations about the educational reality today. It relates not only to educational institutions but also to the broader public space. What does this mean for the institution of school? Are unofficial educational agents a threat to it?
