Description
The presented publication addresses the issue of justifying the existence of political systems and the decision-making processes occurring within them at the present time. It thoroughly analyzes classical concepts of legitimacy of power, including their relationship to the conceptual apparatus of the modern state, such as the idea of sovereignty and representation. The work critically examines the current nature of supranational political systems, where manifestations of the current decline of statehood and democratic forms of legitimizing power can be mapped. It concludes that all concepts of democratic legitimacy that do not reduce legitimacy to mere consequences of power necessarily presuppose the existence of a state as a geographically and functionally closed, perceivable system with a single ultimate source of norm-creating authority.
