Description

The book addresses the role of mass media in the processes of constructing national identity. In the first part of the work, the author focuses on presenting selected mechanisms of the nationally integrative impact of mass media, some of which are further empirically examined within a case study of Czech television news. The second part of the book primarily focuses on the analysis of the discourse of media imperialism as a specific type of approach to the issue of globalization. With the help of various theoretical works and empirical data from different parts of the world, the author attempts to reveal the inadequacy of this paradigm, which overlooks the dynamics of the global media market in recent decades, as well as the obvious resistance of the audience to imported products and the tendency to prefer local/national media content.
