Description
The monograph deals with semantic uncertainty in everyday English conversation, primarily focusing on phenomena of indirectness, impersonality, weakening and strengthening of meaning and its modification, as well as vagueness of meaning. The research is based on material from spoken English contained in the corpus 'A Corpus of English Conversation', which represents various genres of spoken language (immediate conversation, telephone conversations, and interviews). The interpretation of spoken language is significantly pragmatic and sociolinguistic, relying on the latest findings in this field and available scholarly literature, predominantly of Anglo-Saxon origin.
