Description
The two-part monograph is a commented inventory of dipteran insects from northwestern Bohemia in the Duchcov–Bílina area, prepared by a team of 26 Czech and 10 foreign specialists. From 1992 to 1999, intensive research was conducted in all major biotopes affected by mining, which formed the basis for this work. The first part of the monograph presents a total of 43 families from the Nematocera and Brachycera groups, excluding Schizophora. The second volume evaluated the remaining 47 families. Together, nearly 3,000 species are commented on in both volumes, of which 180 are new to the fauna of the Czech Republic and 224 species are new to the fauna of Bohemia. Each identified species is supplemented with an extensive commentary that includes notes on its distribution, abundance, and the trophic requirements of its larvae. Based on these foundations, the biological value of the studied area is then discussed.
