Description
In 1927, a widower, Jewish lawyer Eduard Schwarz, bought a house on Matoušova Street in Smíchov to provide a dignified residence for himself and his family. He was fortunate to die before World War II began. Tereza Boučková, who lived in the house from birth until adulthood and returned there a few years ago, presents us in her novel with a nearly hundred-year-long story of the Schwarz descendants, as well as other residents of the house, intertwined with the history of the twentieth century. The author literally searches for their fates in real-time, and it is so intense that readers do not want to put the book down until they finish it. She writes emotionally, with irony, but also with sadness about the people whom both monstrous ideologies, Nazism and Communism, sought to humiliate, rob, imprison, or murder.
