Description
Honoré de Balzac (1799–1850), one of the best-known French writers, is especially famous for his vast literary work The Human Comedy (1842), in which he sought to capture every aspect of life in France after the Napoleonic era. In these ten stories from 1830–1835, he draws on themes typical of the literature popular at the time: immortality, a pact with the devil and the elixir of youth. He is ironic, provocative and at times blasphemous, philosophizing about the elusive meaning of life and cruelly mocking the conditions of “respectable” society, while startling with his ability to glimpse the dark sides of the human soul. Most of these stories, translated by Dana Melanová, appear in Czech for the first time. The contents are in Czech.
