Description
One Life is the first of Maupassant's six novels and the second most famous after Bel-Ami. The heroine of the 1883 work is Jeanne de Lamare, a sympathetic, perhaps somewhat naive girl, kind-hearted and full of ideals, which she gradually loses throughout her life... Her husband turns out to be a miser and a notorious womanizer. She discovers that her mother had a lover and that the maid has a child with her husband. Even her son disappoints her. Thus, Jeanne gradually becomes a bitter, humiliated woman who, despite everything, seeks a late meaning in life. Life is never as good or as bad as we think.
