Description
My name is Maryte – a sentence that six-year-old Renata learns in Lithuanian and repeats like a spell against all evil. She comes from a small town in East Prussia, now part of the Kaliningrad region, and has the misfortune of being German. Shortly after the war, history sweeps her away to a foreign land, where she receives a new name along with a new identity and hope for a new life. The novel about the phenomenon of so-called wolf children – wolfskinder, who still live in Lithuania, caused a sensation upon its release in 2012 and became the Lithuanian Book of the Year. The author reveals a hidden corner of European history with extraordinary tenderness and passion, depicting in stark sequences, written in a simple yet poetically delicate language, how easily one could get lost in the harsh winter of 1946.
