Description
The novel captures the short life of fictional photographer Lillian Preston from the early 1950s to the late 1970s. Lillian, a girl from a conservative Midwestern family, comes to New York to study photography against her parents' wishes. However, she becomes pregnant relatively soon and, as a single mother, finds herself on the fringes of society and in a tight financial situation. In her almost self-destructive, intensely self-centered passion for art, she disregards both conventions and her standard of living.
