No one will be surprised that ammunition for handguns is a permanent subject of interest for soldiers, police officers, members of security and special services, hunters, sport shooters, and citizens carrying weapons for their defense, not to mention collectors of ammunition and enthusiasts of military history in general.

Each of these groups, however, has a different perspective on ammunition for understandable reasons. Therefore, we strive to present information about individual cartridges as a certain compromise of various viewpoints.

Although the history of standardized cartridges for handguns is relatively short, it is now almost impossible to determine how many calibers of ammunition have been produced in this not-so-long time. Providing truly reliable information about all the calibers that have left factory gates over the past approximately 150 years is currently extraordinarily difficult, if not entirely impossible.

Therefore, we focused on both centerfire cartridges, which are internationally standardized, and some cartridges that are now outdated but were significant or interesting in their time.
