Description
The Air Force also played an important role in the Pacific. However, the battles here were quite different from those occurring on other fronts. The Japanese were the first to understand that in the vast expanses of the Pacific, they could only support their units from the decks of aircraft carriers and focused on building a naval air force. During the first months, they therefore achieved victories, and both the British and American air forces suffered a number of humiliating defeats. It was not until the second half of 1942 that a series of aircraft carrier battles halted their advance. The American air force, on the other hand, was growing at an incredible speed. Although the Japanese fought back with courage, often bordering on fanaticism, they could not withstand such overwhelming force.
