The Allied bombing campaign aimed at the war machinery of Nazi Germany represents a unique event in history. It was the very first time that military forces could attempt destruction on such a scale from the heights of the heavens. And it was the very first time that advanced technology allowed for the use of such an overwhelming number of bombers to achieve this goal. The strategic bombing offensive was not among the heavily photographed events. Official films and images of aircraft, personnel, and raids were limited by the very fact of the madness of wartime life and, not least in the case of the RAF, by the fact that its raids mostly took place at night. The use of personal cameras and film was prohibited, yet it existed, allowing subsequent generations a better insight into how the bombing squadrons operated. Which is, after all, the fundamental aim of this pictorial publication – to outline the everyday dramas of those days and years. Roger A.
