Description
The story of the wartime events that Colonel Jiří Větvička experienced from 1939 to 1943 begins with the crossing of the border into Poland, continues with military experiences in that country, the march into the Soviet Union, and ends with memories of Buzuluk, where the 1st Czechoslovak Field Battalion was formed in January 1942. Colonel Jiří Větvička was one of the thousands of soldiers of the Czechoslovak foreign army who fought on the toughest front of World War II. Moreover, he was one of the first several hundred volunteers who, after a risky escape across the heavily guarded borders of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, eagerly awaited the war that would allow them to fight for the freedom of their occupied homeland, and who formed the Czechoslovak Legion on Polish territory – the first military unit of the future Czechoslovak national liberation army. Karel Richter conveys Colonel Jiří Větvička's narrative in this book, sentence by sentence, with a sense of satisfaction, as the first version of the memoirs published by Naším vojskem in 1969, presented by Karel Richter himself, was withdrawn from bookstore shelves by official order and removed from libraries for political reasons.
