His characters are often stripped of all moral values, and in this book, it is amplified into a feeling of total depression, skepticism, and the impending inevitability of death. Some might say that it is an unprecedentedly raw bloodbath and that Žáček's land is not 'for the old or the young.' But it is primarily about searching for exits in hopeless situations and the journey towards death and both physical and psychological defeat. After all, the 'happy' ending of this book is the death of the main character. But what is the reality? Josef Kugelstein is dead and Jan Žáček is alive. Or is it the other way around?
