Combine Kerouac's On the Road with Bukowski's drunken short stories, swap America for the Czech Republic, and you have the novel On the Waves of Sect and Nicotine. Figuratively, of course. It follows the lives of three friends: Max, Grimm, and Cyril. Behind these nicknames lie the fates of three young men who are fed up with the local small-town morality and the desire to simply have a career, a happy family, and a secure future. Therefore, they rebel and, like three musketeers, step into the light in their own unique way, true to Breton's quote that one must rebel to remain human. Alcohol, drugs, women. Their fun and joy, however, is just a matter of how long one can live like that. What about conscience? Morality? A hidden wave of responsibility. That is the dilemma. For some, it brings them to the bottom, while for others, it lifts them to the heavens. On the Waves of Sect and Nicotine depicts life on the periphery. A periphery that the actors chose themselves, even though they didn't have to. They had everything at home, yet they gave it up to hit rock bottom, where they believe freedom and liberty lie. With the heroes, we often experience bizarre situations full of dark humor, but also serious matters that leave reason baffled.
