As we approached the front edge of the defense, the infantrymen told us that they had heard clanking sounds in the minefields to the north at night, like the slow turning of tank treads. We listened for a moment, but heard nothing. It was slowly starting to dawn, but the fog still lingered close to the ground. We hadn't walked twenty steps when we heard two cannon shots almost simultaneously nearby. We dropped to the ground and cautiously looked around to see what it could be. About fifty meters away, we caught sight of two tanks in the rising fog. One was standing still, while the other was reversing. Our soldiers did not only fight in World War II in England and on the Eastern Front, but also in North Africa as part of the Foreign Legion. This was processed according to the handwritten legacy of František Fajtl.
