This is a novel about Australian soldiers during World War II. A battalion like the Second X never actually existed; I attempted to create typical Australian infantrymen from its members. Therefore, the main characters depicted here are composed of many people. Nevertheless, it can be truthfully said that they have nothing in common with living individuals – for the people I chose as models are dead.
